Aethelred II (978-1016), contemporary imitation silver Penny, probably Scandanavian, retrograde design and legends, style of long cross obverse coupled with a last small cross reverse, draped bust right, legend retrograde reading from lower right, .+EÐEORD ERD AGLO, rev. small cross at centre, linear and outer toothed borders with blundered legend surrounding, .MYNNWXINNMIVVXM, weight 1.48g (Malmer 403/1855; N.774/777; S.1151/1154). Peck marked both sides, mainly on reverse, of good weight, very fine, the reverse legend unintelligible but reminiscent of some Hiberno Norse readings, very unusual and very rare.
