Alfred the Great (871-899), King of Wessex, silver Penny, Moneyer Cuthbert, small cross pattee within linear circle, legend and toothed border surrounding, in three parts as Edward the Elder style, +ÆL FRE D RE, rev. Moneyer name in two horizontal lines retrograde, divided across centre by central pellet and trio of pellets either side, in retrograde CVÐB ERHT, weight 1.05g (N.639; S.1067). Some ghosting of obverse centre device onto reverse, toned, a little short of flan, otherwise good very fine and rare with retrograde legend and a good provenance.
