Carian Islands, Rhodes (c. 404-385 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm. Head of Helios facing, slightly inclined to the right, rev. POΔ-ION, rose, with a bud on right, an olive-sprig and Φ on left; all within an incuse square, 15.30g., 12h (D. Bérend, 'Les Tétradrachmes de Rhodes de la première période, 1er partie', SNR 51, 1972, 79 (this coin); Ashton 43, pl. 6.2; Prospero, lot 50 (this obverse die)). Extremely rare, only eight examples (including this piece) recorded by Ashton. Of outstanding style, one of the finest of this series, surfaces a little bright and some light traces of double-striking on reverse, otherwise struck in high relief and extremely fine, a beautiful coin.
