Charles I (1625-49), silver Shilling, York Mint (1643-44), type 5, engraved by Nicholas Briot, crowned bust in stellate lace collar left, value XII in field behind with lozenge above, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides with lozenge stops, initial mark lion both sides, .CAROLVS. D: G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. ET. HIB. REX, rev. struck en medaille, crowned oval quartered shield of arms with lion skin garniture, EBOR the Latin name of York in cartouche below, .CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO, weight 5.45g (Besley dies 2Dd; Brooker 1098; N.2320; S.2874). Some light surface marks and pitting mainly on obverse field, some light short scratches, a little weak near centre in striking both sides of coin, otherwise toned, very fine.
