Edward III (1327-77), gold Noble, Pre-Treaty series Ga (1356-61), variety with REX omitted, King standing in ship sailing right, with upright sword and quartered shield, Latin legend beaded circles surrounding, annulet stops both sides, E DWARDo DEIo GRAo AIIGLo Zo FRAIICo Do hYoBo E, rev. tiny E at centre of ornamental cross with lis terminals, small annulet either side of top lis, crowns over lions in angles, fleur de lis by upper right lion, all within a beaded and linear tressure, fleurs in spandrels, legend +IhCo AVTEmo TRAIICIEIISo Po mEDIVmo ILLORVmo IBAT, unbarred As, weight 7.68g (Doubleday 93; Schneider 40; N.1179; S.1490). Toned with a nice clear depiction of the King, well centred strike, an extremely rare and interesting variety as the "Kingless" Noble with a good provenance, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as MS62.
