Edward III (1327-77), gold Noble, Pre-Treaty series Gg (1356-61), King standing in ship sailing right, with upright sword and quartered shield, Latin legend beaded circles surrounding, saltire stops both sides, saltire before legend, xE DWARDx DEIx GRAx REXx AIIGLx Zx FRAIIEx D hY B, with E for C in French title, rev. large E at forward angle at centre of ornamental cross with lis terminals, small pellet either side of top lis, crowns over lions in angles, fleur de lis by upper right lion, all within a beaded and linear tressure, fleurs in spandrels, legend +IhE'x AVTEmx TRAIICIEIISxx P'x mEDIVmx ILLORVmx IBAT, unbarred As, 7.61g (Doubleday 119/121; cf.Schneider 52; N.1183; S.1490). Toned with light porosity perhaps from excavation in water, struck a little short of flan, otherwise very fine, unusual with the misspelt FRANC as FRANE.
