Edward VI (1547-53), gold Sovereign, third period (15th December 1550-6th July 1553), second coinage (from 5th October 1551) struck in crown gold of 22 carat at Twenty Shillings face value, Tower Mint I and II, crowned armoured half-length figure of King right, holding orb and sceptre, linear and beaded circles surrounding with Latin legend both sides, initial mark tun both sides, :E'DWARD; VI: D': G': AGL': FRA; Z: hIBER': REX:, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, crowned lion supporter to left, dragon supporter to right, ER on banner below, .IhS; AVTEm. TRAnSIE; PER mEDI; ILLORV; IBAT., weight 11.17g (Schneider 692; N.1927; S.2450). Well struck on a broad flan, some tiny pits and surface marks mainly in fields, otherwise more evenly struck than usual,has been graded and slabbed by NGC as XF45, rare as such and very desirable.
