George II (1727-60), silver Threepence, 1740, 40 struck over smaller 40, young laureate and draped bust left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding both sides, GEORGIVS. II. DEI. GRATIA., rev. crowned mark of value, date either side of crown, legend commences upper right, .MAG. BRI. FR ET. HIB. REX. (Bull 1799; ESC 2027; S.3713B). Toned, almost extremely fine, the variety listed as 40 over 39, but on closer examination a smaller 4 and 0 can be seen underneath, probably as used on smaller silver, unusual and rare.
