George III 1775 Pattern Third-Guinea SP58, rarest initial date
George III (1760-1820), gold Pattern Third Guinea of Seven Shillings, 1775, laureate head right, legend surrounding, GEORGIVS. III. DEI. GRATIA., rev. inverted die axis, crowned lion standing left on large crown with caul, date either side at top, legend surrounding, MAG. BRI. FR. ET. HIB. REX., edge grained (WR 136 R4; KM-Pn54; EGC 883 R6; Douglas-Morris 77; Montagu 551; Murdoch 168). Attractively toned, a couple of tiny dark spots in obverse legend, some hairlines, has been graded and slabbed by PCGS as SP58 as these patterns are not very proof-like, the initial 1775 issue of the highest rarity as we can trace no more than three examples in private hands.
