Scotland, Alexander III (1249-86), silver Penny, first coinage, long voided cross and stars (1250-1280), Type II, Glasgow mint, moneyer Walter, youthful fileted head right with sceptre breaking inner linear circle, legend reads +ALEXANDER REX, rev. voided long cross, four stars of six points in angles, legend surrounds WALT' ON GLA, weight 1.21g (SCBI 35 [Scottish], 94-95; Burns 50c, fig 92e; S.5042). Dark tone with a fully centred strike, legible legends both sides, especially the Glasgow signature, Walter being the sole moneyer of what may have been an episcopal mint, wear in obverse die, otherwise near very fine for issue and very rare.
