Scotland, James VI (1567-1625), gold Rider with a nominal value of 100 Scottish Shillings, before Accession, 1594, Seventh coinage, mintmark quatrefoil, inner toothed borders both sides, King on horseback in flight fully armoured with upright sword, date in exergue, pellets either side, Latin legend surrounds IACOBVS. 6. D.G.R. SCOTORVM., rev. crowned coat of arms, Scottish Lion rampant left, lis adorned frame, reads SPERO MELIORA, weight 4.60g (SCBI 35 [Ashmolean], 1161-64; SCBI 58 [Edinburgh], 1278-82; SCBI 71:- Stewartby; Burns 4-5, fig. 954; S.5458).An exceptional piece, deeply engraved dies, some slight weakness probably in the die reflected in parts of legend and the horse's tail, otherwise extremely fine, rare date. A fetching coin, superb.
