Sextus Pompey, Silver Denarius. Minted in Sicily, 37-36 B.C. MAG PIVS - IMP ITER, Pharos of Messana, surmounted by a statue of Neptune, helmeted, holding a trident and a rudder, his left foot resting on a prow; below is a ship left, with aquila on prow and a sceptre tied with a fillet, and a trident, on stern, rev. PRAEF CLAS ET OR[AE MARIT] EX S C, the monster Scylla left, wielding a rudder with both hands, 4.02g., 6h (Crawford 511/4a; Sydenham 1348; Woytek, p. 558; RBW 1786 var.). A little softly-struck on ship and the corresponding part of the reverse, beautiful old cabinet tone, about extremely fine, a good example of this rare type.
